Analysis of several common safety hazards of diesel generator sets

When any machine fails, diesel generator sets are no exception. So, what are the common safety hazards of diesel generator sets?

Diesel generator sets are the last guarantee for data centers. Once the load capacity and various electrical characteristics of the diesel generator sets do not meet the power requirements of the data center, normal power supply will not be available, which will cause the data center to be interrupted. Such accidents It happens from time to time, and we can analyze the causes of such accidents in order to come up with effective solutions.

Limitations in daily maintenance of diesel generator sets:

  1. Inspect the four leaks, surface, starting battery, engine oil and fuel of the unit;

  1. Clean and improve the environment of the computer room, and replace the three filters regularly;

  1. Carry out no-load operation every month and load test machine and other maintenance every six months;

  1. Use power monitoring to observe electrical quality parameters in real time.

Maintenance method limitations:

  1. The load test in the existing maintenance is only a load test of the existing electrical equipment at the back end;

  1. Test the electrical characteristic parameters of the diesel generator set at full load and at full load for the specified time.

  1. A large amount of carbon deposits are produced during no-load testing and low-power loading.

In addition, the diesel generator set will experience varying degrees of power decline depending on the environment of the machine room, service life, inadequate daily maintenance, replacement of equipment and components, etc. This poses a very important safety hazard, and the diesel generator set will be unloaded or unloaded for a long time. Idling operation produces carbon deposits, which will cause the engine output power to decrease, affect the power output of the entire unit, and even cause the illusion of normal operation. Once the load is actually loaded, a major failure will occur and the diesel generator set cannot operate normally.

Formation of carbon deposits: Because the combustion chamber is too low, it is impossible for the fuel to be completely burned, which will cause carbon deposits, thereby blocking the fuel injector nozzle holes and piston rings, and "black oil" will overflow from the exhaust pipe. The valve may become stuck. Some unburned diesel will wash away the lubricating oil on the cylinder wall and dilute the oil in the crankcase, causing all running parts in the engine to suffer from poor lubrication.

When the diesel generator set operates under a small load, as the running time continues, the following faults will occur:

  1. The piston-cylinder liner is not well sealed, the engine oil flows up and enters the combustion chamber for combustion, and blue smoke is emitted from the exhaust;

  1. For supercharged diesel engines, due to low load and no load, the boost pressure is low. It is easy to cause the sealing effect of the supercharger oil seal (non-contact type) to decrease, and the oil will escape into the supercharging chamber and enter the cylinder along with the intake air;

  1. Part of the oil that flows up to the cylinder participates in combustion, while part of the oil cannot be completely burned and forms carbon deposits on the valves, intake passages, piston tops, piston rings, etc., and some of the oil is discharged with the exhaust. In this way, engine oil will gradually accumulate in the exhaust passage of the cylinder liner, and carbon deposits will also form;

  1. If the oil accumulates in the supercharging chamber of the supercharger to a certain extent, it will leak out from the joint surface of the supercharger;

  1. Long-term low-load operation will more seriously lead to increased wear of moving parts, deterioration of the engine combustion environment, etc., leading to early overhaul period.

Running the diesel generator set at full load for a long time can not only improve its own performance and identify safety hazards, but also avoid major data center outage accidents.
